<p>How do both internal and external factors affect individuation?</p>
<p>Individuation: Outer Aspects</p>
<p>Our personalities are shaped, in part, by outside forces. Jung believed that the environment in which we develop has a huge, and indelible, impact on our personalities. Will it cause us to bloom or wilt? As children, a positive environment provides stimuli, love, connections, and a variety of experiences that help us learn and grow. A negative environment, on the other hand, interferes with growth and hinders the integration of personality.</p>
<p>Parents, of course, are at the center of outer aspects of individuation because they have the closet relationship with children during formative years. They do this by providing stimuli, experiences, and love &#8211; or by being overprotective, restricting experiences, transferring their own tendencies onto the child, or compensating for their own weaknesses via the child. In either case, the impact on the personality is incredible.</p>
<p>Just as external factors influence the development of personality, so too do outer aspects impact the process of individuation. Jung said, &#8220;Individuation has two principal aspects; in the first place it is an internal and subjective process of integration, and in the second it is an equally indispensible process of objective relationship. Neither can exist without the others, although sometimes one and sometimes the other predominates.&#8221;</p>
<p>In order to understand ourselves, we have to see who we are in relation to others. We need interaction and connection in order to have a true sense of our whole personality and psyche. We operate in the world, and our personality is not separated or immune from its influences. But with the process of individuation, we can work to present our true self to the world.</p>
<p>We must look at ourselves in connection with others &#8211; but we also have to separate ourselves and see who we are as distinct individuals. While external factors may influence our personalities, we need to be aware that we are responsible for our own emotional states.</p>
<p>Individuation: Internal Aspects</p>
<p>Jung believed we had to examine different aspects of our personality in order to facilitate the individuation process. These aspects, according to Jung:</p>
<p>1	Mask. This is our Dr. Jekyll, the good face that we present to the world. Our mask is how we appear to others and it is essential in our interactions with society. When we do not adopt a mask or identify closely enough, we can appear false. If we identify too closely, on the other hand, we lose sight of who we really are.</p>
<p>2	Shadow. If the persona is our Dr. Jekyll, the shadow is the Mr. Hyde. This is our dark side, our suppressed emotions and traits. We may be greedy, selfish, indifferent, or egotistical, but we tamp down this side of our personality. Through individuation, we guide this part of our psyche instead of hiding it.</p>
<p>3	Anima or Animus. This is like the concept of ying and yang. In men, anima is the representation of female tendencies, such as nurturing, caring, and intuition. In women, animus is the personification of male tendencies, like power. This part of our personality is affected by the collective view of men and women, as well as our own experiences. Again, individuation calls for us to integrate these aspects into our true self.</p>
<p>4	The wise old man. The archetype of the wise old man represents power and wisdom. While these are typically positive attributes, there is the danger that this power can become destructive. In the process of individuation, one has to criticize and analyze this aspect of the self.</p>
<p>5	The Great Mother. This is the archetype typically associated with women and it represents great love and the capacity for nurturing, protection, and guidance. The danger is that women may over-identify and become worn from &#8220;mothering&#8221; or view everyone else as needing help and guidance. We need to balance this aspect of our personality.</p>
<p>Individuation occurs throughout our entire lives, and with experience and wisdom, we can integrate various elements of our personality. This allows us to present our true self to the world. Individuation is difficult; more so because we are often obliged to wear so many masks. The goal, though, is to make your persona match who you really are.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Communication is so important that it can make or break a relationship, is critical to success, and instantly reflects your self-esteem to listeners &#8212; for better or for worse. Assertive communication commands respect, projects confidence, and inspires influence. It is respectful, direct, honest, open, non-threatening and non-defensive. It is not demanding, aggressive, or manipulative.</p>
<p>Communication is learned. With practice you can learn to communicate assertively, which will raise your self-esteem and self-assurance and improve your relationships and professional performance. Even fetuses can learn to communicate with their mothers. To learn the keys to assertiveness discussed below, remember the 6 Cs:</p>
<p>1. Congruency</p>
<p>2. Courtesy</p>
<p>3. Conciseness</p>
<p>4. Clarity</p>
<p>5. Cognizance</p>
<p>6. Claim yourself</p>
<p>Communication has many elements. You communicate with more than your words. You relay information with your entire body, through:</p>
<p>1. Gesture</p>
<p>2. Eye contact, movement, moisture, expression, and focus</p>
<p>3. Posture</p>
<p>4. Physical appearance</p>
<p>5. Voluntary and involuntary bodily movement, including muscular tension</p>
<p>6. Facial expression</p>
<p>7. Skin color (e.g. blushing) and perspiration</p>
<p>8. Body smell</p>
<p>Additionally, your voice communicates through:</p>
<p>1. Volume</p>
<p>2. Pitch</p>
<p>3. Cadence</p>
<p>4. Tone and emphasis</p>
<p>5. Fluidity</p>
<p>6. Enunciation</p>
<p>Congruence</p>
<p>What you don&#8217;t say, your body reveals. Customs&#8217; agents are expert at reading body language to spot liars. Key to effective communication is authenticity, meaning honesty and congruence. Truthfulness is about facts. Honesty has more to do with intent and feelings. Say what you think or feel, and mean what you say. You probably assume you already do this, yet dishonesty is more common than you might guess. I&#8217;m not referring to overt lies, but about times you outwardly agree, but inwardly don&#8217;t. Some reasons are:</p>
<p>1. You want to spare someone&#8217;s feelings</p>
<p>2. You want to avert conflict</p>
<p>3. You want to be liked and avoid judgment or criticism</p>
<p>4. You&#8217;re afraid of making a mistake</p>
<p>5. You don&#8217;t want to impose or burden someone</p>
<p>6. You don&#8217;t want to jeopardize a relationship, or</p>
<p>7. You don&#8217;t want to spend the time</p>
<p>The last one is tricky. Imagine you&#8217;re at a party and someone asks you a personal question that you don&#8217;t want to get into then and there. You might avoid the question in many ways, including ignoring it and changing the subject, or walking away to get a drink refill. You might think the reason is no. 7, but ask yourself why you wouldn&#8217;t directly say, &#8220;I prefer not to talk about that now (or here),&#8221; or &#8220;I don&#8217;t know you well enough to discuss that.&#8221; If you think the real answer is no. 1, think again. The foregoing assertive answers are less hurtful than impolite behavior.</p>
<p>When your words don&#8217;t match your insides, you&#8217;re sending a mixed message. A common example is when you say you&#8217;re fine, but your body language reveals the truth that you&#8217;re unhappy. Or, the opposite &#8212; you smile while imparting a sad story. In either case, your listener is confused and doesn&#8217;t know how to respond, and/or may not feel that he or she can trust you.</p>
<p>Courtesy</p>
<p>The purpose of communication is to impart information and feelings, not to vent, avenge, or scold. If you&#8217;re discourteous to listeners, you&#8217;ll lose them. To be effective, you want to engage your listener. To do so, treat him or her with respect. Criticism that is constructive and delivered assertively is more likely to be heeded.</p>
<p>Conciseness</p>
<p>The impact of your speech is inversely related to its duration. Your impact wanes with words. Your listener will want you to cut to the chase and get to the point. When you beat around the bush, it belies insecurity and/or lack of knowledge. When you&#8217;re afraid for any of the reasons mentioned above regarding incongruence, you might be tempted to have a long introduction or disclaimer. Don&#8217;t. If you&#8217;re fearful, sort out the reasons why, practice what you&#8217;ll say out loud, and weigh the long-term repercussions of saying nothing or what you want.</p>
<p>Clarity</p>
<p>Be direct. Don&#8217;t ask questions, give hints, or speak in the abstract. Instead of &#8220;Do you want to go to a movie?&#8221; which is ambiguous as to whether you want to go, state, &#8220;I&#8217;d like to see a movie tonight.&#8221; Make a clear statement of what you think, feel, need, or want. Most communication comes down to those four essentials. You can also explain why.</p>
<p>Cognizance</p>
<p>Cognizance of your audience is essential. You must hear in order to be heard. To be an effective communicator, listen with attention and respect to what others have to say. Genuine listening engages them and helps you attune your message so that others will be receptive. This is attentive, active listening. Paraphrasing and repeating what was said to you will show them that you care and are interested. In turn they&#8217;ll be more receptive when they believe they matter to you.</p>
<p>Timing is critical. Don&#8217;t start an important conversation in the car, or when he or she is watching TV, is on the computer, or otherwise occupied, without his or her permission. You&#8217;re being discourteous and interrupting their attention. You&#8217;ll be disappointed and are setting yourself up for an argument.</p>
<p>Claim Yourself</p>
<p>This is the hardest element. You must take responsibility for your opinions, thoughts, feelings, and needs. That means you don&#8217;t blame or talk about the other person. Don&#8217;t tell them what they should do, or what some expert said. Use &#8220;I&#8221; messages and claim what you think and feel. That doesn&#8217;t mean to say, &#8220;I think you&#8217;re inconsiderate,&#8221; which labels and judges their behavior, without revealing how you feel or how it affects you. Applying all these rules, you might say &#8220;I feel disregarded (or &#8220;unimportant&#8221; or &#8220;angry&#8221;) when you didn&#8217;t return my calls,&#8221; or &#8220;I don&#8217;t like it when you&#8230;&#8221; When you state your feelings or take a position, others don&#8217;t feel as great a need to defend and justify themselves, because you are only talking about yourself. This is particularly difficult to do when you&#8217;re emotional. It&#8217;s better to wait and think about what you feel and what outcome or behavioral changes your want before having the conversation. Consider your bottom line.</p>
<p>Learning assertiveness so that it comes naturally can take years of practice, but it is empowering and worth starting now. The sooner you start, the sooner you&#8217;ll begin raising your self-esteem.</p>

Active imagination, a technique developed by Carl Jung, is similar to connecting to the internet; we are tapping into an alternate source of data that can help us understand the biggest mystery of all: ourselves.</p>
<p>Carl Jung developed a technique called active imagination as a complement to dreamwork. Through this process, one can engage in a conversation between one&#8217;s conscious and unconscious selves. Jung wrote, &#8220;I was sitting at my desk once more, thinking over my fears. Then I let myself drop. Suddenly, it was as though the ground literally gave way beneath my feet, and I plunged into the dark depths.&#8221; And it is in the &#8220;dark depths&#8221; that you can bridge the gap between your conscious and unconscious selves.</p>
<p>Active imagination is not meditation; meditation, a worthwhile practice in itself, requires you to focus your thoughts, mind, and breathing. You must make a conscious effort to quiet your racing thoughts. With active imagination, you do not let your conscious mind take control. Instead, your goal is to allow your unconscious to act itself out. Practitioners have described it as being in between a waking state and a dream state. It is here that we can ask ourselves questions and let our unconscious illuminate us. In this way, we can access tremendous insight, experience, and knowledge.</p>
<p>But how does it work? You have probably skirted around it without even knowing. If you ask yourself what you would do in a particular situation and perhaps have a little daydream about it, you are engaging in very simple, very basic active imagination. On a more advanced level, we allow the unconscious more freedom to express itself without the filtering of the consciousness. It is similar to connecting your computer to the internet; suddenly, you have a wealth of knowledge at your disposal.</p>
<p>Jung let his unconscious and conscious minds converse through visualization. You close your eyes and establish a &#8220;starting point.&#8221; This could be a scene or image from a dream. Imagine this as clearly as you can, and then let your mind go. Do not control it or try to influence it. What results is part fantasy and part dream; a conversation between your conscious and unconscious. The key is to be open to the unconscious but able to react with conscious intent.</p>
<p>Other people engage in active imagination through automatic writing, or free writing. You allow your conscious mind to start the process, perhaps by writing a single line. And then you let your unconscious self speak. Writing is not the only way to allow this to happen; sculpting, painting, crafting, dancing, and other artistic pursuits are also perfect conduits because they allow you to engage these often dueling aspects of your own self. Again, create a starting point, and then let your unconscious guide you.</p>
<p>Still others use dialogue with another person or with an object that is germane to the particular issue on their minds. You start by talking aloud, asking a question to a figure in a recent dream, for instance. The dialogue is allowed to emerge. Others find it easier or more effective to write this dialogue down. You are, then, the scribe for your unconscious. With practice, you can allow it to speak, and then switch to your conscious mind to respond. Jung said, &#8220;Below the threshold of consciousness everything was seething with life.&#8221; The key is to let yourself access this life.</p>
<p>Active imagination may seem mystical or paranormal. It is not. It is very much a human endeavor and a skill that can be developed. If you are able to distinguish reality from fantasy (those who are not can become &#8220;lost&#8221; in their imaginings), active imagination is a potentially powerful process for developing insight and awareness.</p>

But as far as human beings have come, they have not unlocked the mystery of death, and this is where myths still prove very useful &#8211; and very comforting. They are not irrelevant, archaic, or without value: they may, indeed, be the only tool that we have at our disposal to handle the mystery of death.</p>
<p>13th century philosopher, theologian, and mystic, Rumi, wrote, &#8220;Do not be satisfied with the stories that come before you. Unfold your own myth.&#8221; We often do not feel the freedom or power to create our own myths. Why? Because they would be, we think, nothing but stories, nothing but fantasies. But myths have always been much more than that. As Dr. Devdutt Pattanaik writes, &#8220;Myth is truth that is subjective, intuitive, cultural, and grounded in faith.&#8221; Truth itself is subjective, as are the governing principles of our lives. Love, hate, sadness, joy, greed, morals, beauty&#8230;these are stories, fantasies, truths.</p>
<p>Myths make sense of that which may appear inexplicable. When you create your own to deal with the complexities and mysteries of death, you can better accept that death is inevitable. Many people borrow and adapt existing myths to explain death. Heaven, for instance, is a concept that is believed in by billions of people. By &#8220;myth,&#8221; we are not implying that heaven doesn&#8217;t exist, or that it does. We are simply saying that it is an explanation for the inexplicable. Heaven is, to borrow from Dr. Pattanaik, &#8220;subjective, intuitive, cultural, and grounded in faith.&#8221;</p>
<p>It is not the only myth, or explanation, that helps people deal with the mystery of death. Many cultures believe that the soul is reincarnated. Buddhists believe that our souls pass unchanged into another form, based on their karma. Hindus believe that we change bodies just as we change clothes &#8211; without changing our fundamental selves. Mormons believe that we are spirits who are joined with a body upon birth and separated from it briefly at death, only to be rejoined again after the coming of the Christ. Some people believe physical death is also the death of our essence, while others believe in an eternal soul.</p>
<p>But what do you believe? These myths, or explanations, may not be sufficient for you. They may not reflect what you feel is the truth. They may not be what you want to teach your children about death. Therefore, being able to unfold our own myths gives us the freedom to explore what we believe and fashion it into a scenario to which we can subscribe.</p>
<p>Will it? And if it is, so what? The 1994 movie, Corrina, Corrina, tells the story of a man who has just lost his wife. He and his daughter struggle to accept this, and his daughter starts to talk about her mother being in heaven. He says, &#8220;The heaven, the angels, and all that, it&#8217;s just something that people make up so they won&#8217;t feel sad anymore.&#8221; Her reply: &#8220;Well, what&#8217;s wrong with that?&#8221;</p>
<p>Absolutely nothing. In fact, when you believe in a death myth, whether heaven, reincarnation, or something entirely different, you do not need to concern yourself with facts. You only need to concern yourself with truth, creating a scenario that explains death for you. Truth is subjective; we do not know what happens after death. But by building a story, we are able to give ourselves peace. Believing is often more essential than knowing, though that is a difficult concept in our fact-driven society.</p>
<p>Is your body going to be reincarnated into that of a person or even an animal? Are you going to heaven to be greeted by God and loved ones who have died before you? Are you going to become part of nature? Are you going to exist on a different plane? What do you believe? We can build our own myth to explain death in a way that is acceptable for us. It is not going to be based on facts, but on your truths and beliefs. You live your own life, and you die your own death. Why not create your own myth?</p>
